The Role of Urban Space in Berlin’s Transformation into a City of Culture after Reunification
Prof Chistian Kohlross,Dr Jeanette B Markin, Dr. Pablo B Markin, 2010
Since the fall of Berlin wall in 1989 Berlin struggled through the reunification of Berlin and is transformed into a city or vast culture.
In this article Kohlross and Markin criticise the city for becoming too focused on pleasing tourist and that globalisation has gone too far in Berlin, whilst its history is pushed aside. ‘It appears furthermore that public space of modern cities, considered from the point of view of cultural and aesthetic experience’ (Harander and Kulm 2005:225) This suggests that though globalisation and the urbanisation of Berlin , it continues to build a positive mirage to wider society when in fact becoming too much a tourist hotspot takes could be a disadvantage to Berlin and strip away layers of its conflicting past.
However by producing and building new shopping malls, museums, sky scrapers and hosting festivals and events Berlin transforms into a culture hub of activity, which also benefits the economy of Berlin ‘the growing importance between of cities feeds fast upon communication channels interlinking between the culture and economy’ (Castwells,Cohrnane and Jonas:1996) this benefits Berlin as a city however causing issues for native Berliners as the city becomes to tourist orientated however by achieving a more positive representation and social memory seems to be vital to add to the sense of identity in Berlin, Cochrane and Jonas states that ‘it lack a single dominant images to reflect its identity’ (1996) this is continuous with that other theorist have found that Berlin struggles to agree on a national identity such as Karl Scheffler.
This is relevant to research project as up to now whilst researching the city generally, the main focus in the unification of Berlin and the Berlin wall, to discover an article from a different point of view was interesting, and once again linking in with the idea that Berlin wants to alter the representation of the city.
